Here's a picture I haven't seen in a while...

...in fact, I'd forgotten what my office used to look like until I saw this again.
I've got a relative staying with me for the week (yeah, I have The Blondster in bed with the influenza virus, the elderly relative here, and a stress-filled job. No worries here about those final edits. No sirree, Bob.)

Anyway, I got a kick out of this one, because it was taken in the early 80s, just about the time of the end of my novel - not that this woman, this earlier version of me, is the protagonist/narrator, but there's some narrative crossover.

Do you all have any of these novel/not novel pictures to share?

I'm not sure. I don't have all my photo albums here.

That's a cracker, though. Loving the computer. I started work in the 80s and had something very similar making a dent on my desk. In fact, I was one of only two people in the entire office who had a computer, everybody else used a typewriter.

Oh for the days when computer monitors were bigger than your torso with screens greener than the ghastliest Venusian limeade.

You look like you're really enjoying having this taken.

Look at my funky state-of-the-art home office, complete with computer, telephone, fax machine, HIV-resistant daffodils, oh and btw whaddya think of the natty sleeves on this dress?

And is that thing at the very edge of the desk a card file box? Or somewhere to keep your sandwiches?

As for my own photos, I'm making my way towards the early 80s very slowly indeed. Still have to brave the Mother Chooses His Clothes era. Yipes.

(pauses)

Oh this photo is fantastic. I've woken up to add the finishing touches to some of my chef scenes, and to be honest, until I saw this I was a little bleary eyed. Let me just gaze upon this image once again. To marvel at the size of that glass cup, the picture of the race horses on the wall (or are they some kind of weasels?).

Somehow, I think this is going to be a good morning...

Ha! This was my office at a bank in Kentucky, back in the day. Hence the racehorses picture in the background (a bank staple in that region, because of the Kentucky Derby - most people who live there have no idea there's a Derby in England, or that it's pronounced, 'Darby' but the race is held at Epsom, I believe. They think they're the grand ole flag of racehorsing, as it were.

And yeah, Whirl, that top I was wearing, vintage 80s, yeah? I'd forgotten all about that green glass. I was once very possesive of that puppy. Glad you enjoyed the pic, guys - and hope it provides you with some editing grins, Whirl! It did the same thing for me. Put a lot in perspective.

I've had a tough week with my 'relative who constantly hums under her breath' here for the week. I'm about to get in the car with her (in 5 minutes) and drive her the 3.5 hour trip home. The good news? My drive home is ALL ALONE. God, I'm looking so forward to it.

When the writing on the computer was green, it did weird things to my sight. I would work on one for awhile, then every sign that had been white writing on a dark background now had pink writing on the same dark background. Not sure why that happened. The effect lasted for a few hours.

Love the fresh flowers!

I don't miss those green screens. Like Sarah says, they messed with your vision.

I'm going to post a picture of me from 1984 on my blog just so you can see both the bad hair and the horrible blouse-with-scarf-collar I was absolutely in love with.

That picture reminds me of poptarts. Can't say why...

Robin B. said...

Pop tarts, Scott?! Ha! Maybe 'cause they're a bit vintage, too, as in, tasty, but been around a while?

Hey Chris - I think it was an Apple (if I remember this correctly) back before they went 'out' for years.

Yep, freddie - it's the hair, isn't it?

I'm checking you out in just a sec, WW!

Sarah - I remember those weird eye flash things!!

All this talk about Pop Tarts made me want them bad enough I went and bought soome. I don't know why I've always liked those nasty things. You can't call them pastry and calling them tarts is just, well, tarting them up!

Robin, that blouse? I was in luuurv with the silly thing. *eye roll*

She looks said and responsibile, or at least that she'd like to think of her as such.

WO, as usual, made me look at the photo again in a completely different way.

I'll dig through some photos and see what I can find :)

Tuneless humming is a sign of possession and you are allowed to stab culprits through the heart without fear of retribution.

Now I'm thinking about strawberry frosted pop tarts too :(

Oh, gosh, the eighties... I remember those. I'm very dont-photograph-me, so I don't have any. No really, I don't. Yours is great, though, and a whole box of floppy discs there, too.

I never had a Pop Tart. Should I?

Er, that should have said "staid and responsible". Wow, and I am supposedly doing line-editing. Scary stuff.

I never had a Pop Tart. Should I?

No. They taste like cardboard with stale sugar.

But if you grew up with them, then it's a special, comforting flavor of cardboard and stale sugar. :)

I had one bite of one pop tart.

Still receiving treatment for my lips.

Robin B. said...

Oh, come on, ril - not even ONE photo? Please??? I mean, think about it, we wouldn't even recognize you.

Sylvia, go girl. Get us a photo!!!
And I'm with ya on the tuneless humming thing. It drove me batshit crazy.

Pop tarts are weird comfort food. I fully admit it. But sometimes, ya just gotta eat one. Sorry. That's the way it is, Whirl, my man.

If I had one, I might chance it, but I don't; I really don't. Really.

"But if you grew up with them, then it's a special, comforting flavor of cardboard and stale sugar."

Exactly. You don't know why you like the horrible things but you do. My favorite is either brown sugar (literally, that's the filling) or chocolate frosted.

I ate a whole box of them in the last three days, and it was better than a belgian chocolate bar to me.

Must be something about how you connect childhood memories with food smells/tastes/textures.

Oh, Sylvia - GREAT picture, girl!!!

Can we make a post out of it? Can we, can we, huh, huh?????? Can one of us copy and paste it here? It's freaking darling!

ril, if I knew your Mama, I'd pop her a note and ask her for a picture. Lucky thing for you I have no idea who she is, huh?

WW - I get exactly where you are with the memory lane taste buds, honey. I really do!

I can't make the image show up in a comment and no WAY am I going to change my profile pic to that ;)

Looking good, Sophia!

I posted some pics of myself almost three years ago on the blog, which takes you back to 1989, which is the earliest pic I have with me and happens to coincide with the last bit of high school.

Here's the link

Hey paca,

I just went and looked. I LOVE those pictures!

And Sylvia, can I put the pic of yours on this blog, and simply say, it's not me...guess who...and see if people do?

I don't mind although I suspect this conversation will have been spotted by many!
