if you could move somewhere else? When you close your eyes and envision yourself somewhere else, where is it?
Because JB and I are now asking each other that question.
Here are the criteria:
1. We need to wait until next summmer or so when the youngest of our combined clan goes on to college.
2. We hate the cold. We don't mind if we only see summer and a winter that seems like spring, ever again.
3. We love the water. Especially the ocean.
4. We love pubs and interesting people and hanging out for a laugh and a story here and there.
5. We will need to work - college ain't inexpensive - so we need some English speakers around us, somehow.
6. Our combo plan family are around the East Coast of the U.S., and in Britain, so the trip to both places needs to be easy. (It will be super easy if we stay somewhere in the States besides the DC area - too cold in the winter), but that's not set in stone, as we are fully aware, and in no way lying to ourselves, that we do not have forever to do whatever. We want our move to be gratifying, because 'we are all terminal cases', as Irving said Garp said, and we want to live, finally, the way we want to live, in a place we choose to be rather than in a place we're stuck, family commitments, etc.
Whatcha got? Any ideas?

Where would you go...

California? Sounds pretty close to what you describe. OTOH, if you want to stay near the East coast, maybe Florida might work.
For myself, I would love to live in New England, but only if I were very rich.
SW Florida. It's not the ocean, but you don't get this on the ocean. Yes, that's the sun literally melting into the water. That was last weekend on Captiva. Anything from Sarasota south is where I'd be.
let me know when you've moved and I'll be there!!!!!!!
Sounds to me like you could do with an island somewhere in the mid-atlantic.
They never got round to making Thunderbirds II, so maybe Tracey Island is up for grabs.
It's worth thinking about, if only for the dinky hats...
Well, Stacy, BT's picture confirmed your idea about Florida!
Wow,BT, thst is one beautiful sunset. Sarasota south, huh? Cool.
JB and I had rummaged around with the idea of living on the intracoastal somewhere, but that's only on the East Coast, and they don't get these sunsets, obviously.
No worries, Jan - I was hoping you'd come!
An island might be nice, too, Whirl. Only prob is - do they hsve good internet connections? Because I can't make it without one of them babies.
We also thought about Portugal or Spain sometime, but not until the youngest is past the first few years of college. And there's work.
If you're going to Spain, let me tag along! At some point I'll just find a rich guy named Javier to marry.
The economy isn't good here on the Spanish coast at the moment so although you could happily surround yourself with English speakers (too much so, where I am!), you'll have problems finding paying work. I know a couple who have recently relocated out here - she's here full-time, he spends 6 weeks at a time back in England making money (he's a builder, working specifically on listed buildings) and then comes here for the next 4. It works for them but then they had it organised before relocating.
On the other hand, things could look very different by next summer.
I'm guessing you want to stay in the Atlantic region, and with no winters (right?) that narrows things down quickly. Maybe Charleston, SC, in the States, or Florida. Perhaps could investigate Savannah. My mom has a home on the beach in Morocco, but that doesn't work with the English-speaking thing. Ooh, Gibraltar if you could get a job.
My other idea was Bermuda or something like St. Thomas. Bermuda's going to have the easier flights I would think. I've been to Bermuda once - lovely, quite warm, lots of tourists of course. But there might be some decent jobs, especially with what I think your job background is, with all the companies who move offshore there as a tax haven. My father actually moved a company there once and has been a good 10 times at least, so I could quiz him if you like.
Hmmm... Well, I just read a bit about Bermuda expats and it appears to be almost impossible to move there permanently. After a certain number of years, immigration will kick you out. Even children born there will not get papers. So, forget that, I guess.
My only other idea besides South Carolina down to the Carribean is a resort town in the UK like St. Ives in Cornwall. No idea what winter is like there, but summer was quite pleasant (for the two days we were there).
I could recommend Hawaii, but that's a simple 24 hour trip to Europe if not more.
This tugs on all of my wanderlust tendencies.
A mobile home? Travel up and down as you like? Just tossing it out there...
But BT's photo makes a strong case for Florida. It was what popped into my head before reading these comments.
Of course, I want you to stay in DC sweetie. Not too far from me.
;-)

Actually, it's a lot like Summer, only with gale force winds, battering sea storms, snow, ice...
I can't think of any one place I'd want to stay. I like variety -- seaside, mountains, forest... I miss the cold when I've had too much sun; I miss the sun when the winter's gone on for too long. I guess I like the temperate climate. New Zealand strikes me as a place that would suit me well, because that country has pretty good mix of climates.
Anyway, back to work...
Sorry I havent been around to visit much on my own blog! What a great host, huh?
Hey Stacy,
If we end up in Spain or Portugal in a few years, I'll let ya know.
Hi Sylvia,
We're bringing the girls to your general neck of the woods sometime next summer - barring work-related surprises and a continuing, if fake, rise from the ashes of the almost-depression. JB wants to be maybe half an hour away from the main deal of the expats, if we move to that part of the world - a smallish town close to but not in kind of thing. If you have any ideas, can you let me know?
Hi Paca,
I think a smallish college town somewhere on the Georgia/South Carolina coast sounds good.
I like Cornwall as well - we rented a house a few years ago and stayed there a few weeks. But it's 'cold as dawg' in the winer, or at least, depressing and rainy.
JB nixed Britain as a living destination for that reason (which is actually a bummer, as they have the best bars/pubs, and loads of characters I loved to talk with).I agree, though - it's gorgeous.
Hey ril,
I'm guessing New Zealand would be wonderful - only problem is - it's too far away from everyone. But I'd love to visit there.
Basically that means move inland - any good coastal areas have already been built up. To be honest, Cliff and I have said that if we had to do it all again, we'd have lived into the mountains within driving distance of the sea. On the other hand, then I wouldn't get to do these great walks! :)
Clearly Mallorca is your new home. Isle of Jersey?
