On hiatus for....

a while. I don't know how long.

When this weekend is over, I'll have only a few chapters left to edit to have a decently strong manuscript together; after writing and thinking this through and writing again, and sometimes over, since the summer of 2006, I'm feeling relieved that it's actually coming together.

I'm not saying I'm arrogant or stupid enough to think I won't have to make any changes - but I am saying I'll be 'there' enough to read through it whole, check in here and there (on key passages and on fixes,to see if said fixes worked) with my very small group of close-to-the-vest first readers, and send this novel out into the world.

I'm thinking maybe we could do another group reading between holidays - maybe the first part of December? What do you all think? And what would you want us to read?

Love you guys. Talk to you later.

I'd have to wait until mid-December. My semester ends somewhere around the 16th. I know that's close to the holidays, but I've got so much crap due before then I don't see how I can say yes to one more thing.

I'm in. Liked the swap thingy. Good luck with the final-ish manuscript!

I'm glad the manuscript is going well. I'll look forward to seeing you around a bit more when it's finished. Good luck with it.

Hi Freddie,

Mid-December is fine with me!

Hey, McK - it's good to see you here - hope that means you're feeling better! Glad you're in.

Hi FH, Thanks! Hope you're in as well, especially since Sparky loves that voice of yours. (And we do, too, of course!) Hope you're feeling better as well, ma'am.

Thanks, Robin.

It's all pretty much up and down at the moment so I'll let you know nearer the time.

Hurray! It sounds like you are feeling good about finding your way to the end, that's wonderful!

Mid-December works for me, I'll be home until just before Christmas. As to what - that's a tough one. It'd be fun if it involved another exchange, though :)

Only 2 chapters to edit? Lucky you.

It's been no fun not having you around, but I'm guessing it will be worth it in the long run.

Mabe we should do something festive for the next voice thingy.

That's brilliant news on the MS front. So glad it's all coming together.

I have no idea what I'll be doing in Dec yet but it's bound to involve plays, concerts and making decorations as well as Big Son's birthday.

A festive voice thingy sounds like fun! I'll bring the mulled wine!

Mid-December sounds good. Something festive like Whirl said.

Robin - do you want my agent list? I have a nice excel spreadsheet of agents for lit fiction that I had done last year. If it is helpful I'd be happy to send it to you!

Robin, here's an example:

Discussion of Nano

Check out the comments - there's a lot of negativity there. Not just "it's not for me" but "STUPID!" and other epitaphs.

One that caught my eye (and surprised me I guess) was December:

Blah. I think it encourages bad writing habits, feeds misinformation (50k words is NOT a novel), and leads people to think they need a reason or an event or people standing behind them cheering them on in order to write--encourages them to expect those cheerleaders, in fact.

Sylvia: It's another case of people knowing what's right for everyone else based on what's right for them. I'm a bit surprised at December/Stacia's vehemence though.

For me it's like running a marathon. Professionals can use it as part of their training and hobbyists (like me) get the chance to do something they might never do otherwise. Most successful marathon runners don't immediately apply to take part in the Olympics, as far as I know.

It's a good laugh and if people don't like it they can just avoid it.

I'm not quite sure how we got onto this.

Wow, Sylvia and FH-
I just went and read the link.

I'm gonna comment now.

Hey, El - that's so sweet of you!
I may take you up on it - but I actually have been building a list for a while now - segregated into top 10, and why, next 10, and why, etc. etc. But you're a sweetie to mention that!

Here's what I said, by the way:

Wow. This is one helluva long comment trail. A good friend of mine suggested I pop over and check this out. Positive or negative, this has brought out some strong opinions, hasn't it?

I'm about a 500 word a day person, as I prefer to craft as I go - that doesn't make me better or worse than anyone else - it simply makes me me, and that means this month-long writing idea isn't my cup of tea - but I don't see anything wrong with it for those who enjoy the structure and the process (and the extended group-hug part as well).

As for the stats on non-readers, and how we should be plugging a NaNo-Buy-Mo (so to speak) - that sounds like a great idea - but do the two Mo things have to be mutually exclusive?

And as for novel length, I don't believe there is a 'best length' - I think that's more than a bit silly, frankly, though I do believe there is a best length for each book.

Dope was a wonderful novel. Short as hell. Middlesex was much longer (and took a damn long time to write, from what I've read) - and it is breathtakingly well done. Both worthy reads.

Hi Brian, by the way. (Loved your little guy in blue pants metaphor.) I enjoyed your time on BookRoast - and I now have your book at home. Looks very good. I'm looking forward to reading it in a few weeks.

Jonathan - are you ever gonna say what you think, or did I miss it?

Huh. Can't imagine all the fuss about NaNo. If it's not for you, then don't do it. Seems like end of story to me. Here's my take on my NaNo experience.

Hope the editing is going well, Robin!

Robin B. said...

Thanks, Sarah!

And I agree about NaNo - it's what it is - and you either like it or you don't, for who you are and what you're doing, what your goals are, needs are, interests are, no biggie - just like you either like eggplant, or you dont - it's a matter of personal choice, and there's no write or wrong answer.

"No write or wrong answer"

Priceless, Robin honey. Can't wait until you're back from hiatus. When you are, take a stab at the tag.

Hey Pete,

I'm gonna try to do this today - I have company in the house right now- so editing has been out of the question these past few days, and my teeth are grinding from the stress of the visiting.

So...I think I'm gonna say I have some work to do and disappear for an hour or so this afternoon.
