Two years ago I had no idea, nor did I care I had no idea, what a blog was. I found out by accident, to be honest, Googling around for literary agent information. (This was in the late fall of 2006, back when I was innocent a/k/a stupid enough to think I was almost finished with my novel. Yeah.) Anyway, I'd see blah blah blah 'blogspot' and I asked one of my 20-something coworkers what the hell that was.
Fast forward to now. And here I am with you all, a wonderful community of fellow human beings, the best kind really, lovers of the art and soul of the written word.
My route was not circuitous - it came directly through Sparky's blog. Yet another reason why I love that guy, no matter who the hell he really is, because without him, I would know none of you. Or him.
You may or may not have met him yet, but I first 'met' fellow writer/blogger Travis Erwin on Chris's blog last year. He's a nice person, funny and sweet, and one helluva turner of a good phrase.
A few days ago, Travis's home burned to the ground. Erica Orloff and Stephen Parrish, two other bloggers/writers I've seen/met on Chris's blog, and on BookRoast, established a way for those who would like to, to help Travis and his family, and it's a beautiful thing to see, and to share.
Here is the link for the helping blog.
And here is an
article written about it.
Thought you'd want to know.
P.S. I finally learned how to do a link! I think I needed heavy motivation, and this, indeed, was it. (Thanks, FH and Sylvia.)
P.P.S. Hell. I thought I had the link thing, but I don't. Sorry.
P.P.P.S. Thanks, freddie and Sarah! Sarah, what I finally did was copy and paste the link things from the email you sent. Woo hoo!

[a href=http://www.habitatfortravis.blogspot.com] clever name of link that appears in blue[/a]
replace [ with < and ] with > and you got yourself a link.
Friggin formatting. The "[a" part should be in front of the "href" part with a space separating them, not three lines up.
Hey, BT. I saw the aref thingie, and everything looked OK, but when I hit publish, it literally disappeared from where it was inserted in the midst of my text!
I swear. I know I'm dumb about this stuff, but this time, I was watching. I hit the link dealie and put the link in the little box. The whole bit, I thought.
Uh oh. I just reread what you said. I'm lost with the replace part.
Ok, here it is less round about.
< a href=http://www.habitatfortravis.blogspot.com > words in blue < /a >
Now remove the spaces after both "<" and before both ">" and that should work.
I have no idea what a link dealie with a little box is. Sorry.
OK. I may have had a glass or two of white wine, so I will try this in the morning.
And also, how could any guy not know what a link dealie is? Geez. It's so clear, BT. So damn clear!
I know what the link dealie was
You need two parts
1) words that are linked (in BT's example, that's "words in blue")
2) The link (that's the http:// stuff)
SO, write down some words for part one, like
Here is a link!
Then use your mouse to select those words and click on your link dealie. Now put the link in the little box, just like you did.
TADA! Now the words "Here is a link!" will be blue and if you click on them, you'll go to another website.
If that doesn't work, I'll try to explain it this evening after a glass or two of wine.
I think you have to do one or the other. If you type the aref thing and then try to do the link dealie, it won't work. However, if you do as sylvia said, it should work.
Don't know if that makes sense. : )
This sounds like it's gonna take a person like me, or, more specifically, me, a while to do.
So....as I'm alone tonight and most of tomorrow, and I have a finite number of alone hours to actually finish my last chapters, and thus, my novel...a lifelong dream, only days from being realized...well, you get the picture!
I'll try the link dealie another time - and I'll definitely refer to these when I'm going in on another post for another try.
Thanks, you all!
I saw a post on Travis over at Janet Reid's blog. As soon as I get my school money, I'll pop over and buy a brick.
Hey Robin,
I think I can send you a link example by e-mail. I'll try.
They tend to disappear if you have spaces in the wrong places.
I like how much attention Travis is getting. This is a wonderful community.
