Hi,
Hope everyone has had a happy August so far.
I slept almost all night last night, even with my brain still living in another time zone, so I'm feeling all right, and hope all is well where you are, too.
How does Thursday, August 21st look for doing the next voice-a-thon? Does that work?
Thursdays seems to be the day most everybody can be around and blogging.
Sorry this is a short and sweet post!
Whoops - almost forgot to say - I'm absolutely up for doing Whirl's idea of doing a voice exchange this time - where we swap writing and read each other's work. I think that would be a scream to do, in oh so many ways.
OK with you? Thoughts?

I'm up for anything. It'd be pretty funny to read someone else's stuff. Though I would have to read something clean, I don't think I could bring myself to swear out loud, though I don't have as much a problem reading it.
We could email you our text and you could hand them out randomly. Hehe, and then we'd have to go around and find who got ours.
I'm up for it, too. And I also have the same requirement as Natalie--never sworn, certainly can't start now.
In fact, maybe I'll do something of my own so that I can record it this week while I'm visiting my family; I'm guessing my dad has a mic somewhere. Anything would be better than my camera and the automatic lisp it gives me.
Or I could just do something of Natalie's?
Anyway, I'm good with anything. And welcome back, Robin! I hope you had a wonderful trip, and I was so excited to see a new post.
Nice to have you back, Robin.
I'm up for this one as prescribed and can certainly have something to fill the entire hat rather than just the lining to avoid compelling the Morm Grllzzz to blaspheme.
Oh, Whirl, nothing you could do would compel me to blaspheme. If I made it through two births, six years of marriage, and my entire adolescence without slipping up, no amount of compulsion could make me do it now ; )
Although it would be fun to try and read something of yours without tripping up my tongue.
I'm most likely going to have to bow out of this round. It's possible I'll be out of town all next week. Regrettable, but unavoidable. Sorry to bail. Hopefully I'll be able to do this next time.
I think I'm up for it. If I can't come up with anything I've written, then I'll find something else to share.
Oh wait. No, that might be the day I defend my comps. Scratch that.
I am listed as "day to day," and Coach will have to make a game time decision on whether I can go. I would like to. And I think it would be fun to read someone else's work. I think the author should provide basic information about the piece to the reader, and the reader can write a suitable introduction (to make sure everyone watching knows who wrote it). I would say I'm... maybe 85% good for this round.
Like freddie, I can't make this one.
We've got family coming to stay for a few days starting that day, and the weekend after that we go on holiday for a fortnight.
I may not even get to hear them. Now that would be a shame.
Well - we need a date that most all of us can do this, so the 21st is out - because the more the merrier is what makes it fun, and I love listening to everyone.
I was trying to get a date in before school started. Is it better to wait until September, OR, can we hurry up and do something later this week? Friday OK, or is that too soon? I'm gone Saturday, dealing with an illness in the family, but I'll be able to get online a few times, so we could do it then as well, or on Sunday?
It's been fun with all of us posting close to the same time, so I thought it would be good to do that again, especially with the potential humor in the switching. Do you all think so?
AND - Whirl, as this switching thing was your good idea, how had you envisioned the switching being handled?
AND Kiersten and Natalie- would you guys be all right with switching with each other - that takes the worry out of the equation, for me - if you don't mind?
So - votes for:
this Friday
this Sunday
September (after FH is back).
Welcome back!
I'm good with whatever time, and more than happy to switch with Natalie.
Much as I'd love to be in on it, I'm away until 13th September and that's a long time to wait, especially as I can't promise to do it even then.
AND - Whirl, as this switching thing was your good idea, how had you envisioned the switching being handled?
As no-one trains pigeons or possesses the ears for a mind meld, I'd envisioned something like this.
Prior to recording and posting, everyone involved sends you a snippet of text. You throw the entire bundle of fun into a hat and allocate names at random, then email everyone their piece. Then we proceed as per usual. The only problem I can foresee is that some of the people who want to play don't have a visible contact email, but I can't think of anyone who falls into that category.
So — it would be a 2-stage thing, I suppose (unless there's a much easier way), and the timetable may be a little tight now to use Fri (text submissions) and Sun (posts) as deadlines.
The middle of Sept isn't that far away, and as we begin to trudge the sorry slope down from summer to autumn, it may be we'll need more to keep us going by then than re-runs of Sgt Bilko and a ton of chocolate.
So I'm with September.
Yes, with school coming up I don't think I'll be available until September.
Hey BT! Welcome back, right back at ya! I'm so glad to see you around. I've really missed you.
BT- are you gonna do a voice with us? Please?
Thanks, Kiersten- and I appreciate that not minding thing. I'm seriously considering using one of my more, you know, um, physically explicit pieces of prose for this, and hoping like hell one of the guys gets it when I draw the names out of the hat. Or I could be nice - but, well, we'll see.
I'm with Whirl and freddie- September is sounding best.
Freddie - is the 4th too soon after school starts?
I'm in! And welcome back.
September might be better for me as I'm swamped at the moment.
I do have class from 1pm - 5:20pm. But I can have the snippet up by that evening. Is that okay?
Sure, I'm in.
Great, you guys!
Very cool that you're gonna play, BT!
Hey, McK - glad you're in!
Freddie - whatever time is fine, girl. Sounds good, sweetie.
OK- let's just say - September 4 is the day.
Just like last time, just pop a note on here, on the voice post that day, when you're ready, so we'll 'know where ta go'.
If we can do this the way Whirl said, and send in what you want read, then we'll draw names out of the hat - we can make a production of it for fun, or be surprised. Either way could be fun.
Countries not yet heard from:
Paca - is that new date OK with you?
ril?
Sylvia?
Phoenix - can you do one, girl?
Sarah?
Wood?
Chris and Ello and Janey and Julie?
FH? Gonna make EE (and Whirl) all happy?
...EE? (Hey. It's worth a begging kinda shot.)
Here's who's in so far:
Natalie
Kiersten
Whirl
Fredddie
Pete
McK
BT
Me
and probably paca
and maybe FH
Gah, sorry to have jumped in late. On the other hand, adding my dates to the mess probably would have confused things more.
I might be on the road on the 4th but I will have laptop and it could be kind of neat to record from a random spot. I guess I better sort out voice only recording between now and then.
But it does mean I'll need any text I'm to read in advance, please!
I'm happy to swap. I have a flash piece that might get rejected between now and then. I'm also happy to be thrown into the Natalie/Kiersten pot if you want to mix it up a bit, as I tend not to swear in print.
I don't mind swearing either though so whatever. :)
Checked this laptop and didn't find a microphone. Am swamped with, oh, life right now, too.
Hope this is a blast for everyone.
Hey Sylvia- glad you're in!
OK, Sarah - hopefully you can find a mike sometime - so far only Chris has heard ya, ya know.
OK- we now have:
Natalie
Kiersten
Whirl
Fredddie
Pete
McK
BT
Robin
Sylvia
ril
and probably paca
and maybe FH
...
I would love something with swearing in it. I could use letting off a little steam.
I imagine that means I'll be reading blogless troll or Robin. ; )
Hey, freddie. I know just what ya mean.
I'm planing on waiting to see whose name I draw before I decide if my writing snippet is gonna be a sex scene or a redneck scene.
Yeah. Gratifying stuff!
Hey! No fair! I think everyone should submit their work before names are drawn. But then again, you're driving, so you get to pick the radio station.
I made a recording about a month ago while Evil Jr.'s microphone-equipped laptop was available. Obviously it's not someone else's writing. I now have a microphone, so I can trade off or I can be the one person who doesn't read someone else's.
Hi Pete,
OK- you have a point. (That's what I get for hanging around you intelligent people.) You really do.
I don't mind contributing what I was gonna contribute - are you up for reading a sex scene? Or maybe I should back up and decide on something different. I just thought it would be a hoot listening to someone try to read this one - and yes, I promise you, it IS the one I was gonna read next.
Hi EE -
I'm so happy you have a microphone now!
What would you want to do - switch, or not? I think the switching idea is a fine one - not every time - but every once in a while. Would you mind?
I'm so happy you're doing this with us!!
OK, now you have a point. I probably would prefer not to read something really explicit. Whatever we produce immediately gets loose into the wild and cached by Google, and I don't want to upset my chances for appointment to the Supreme Court. And my WIP is YA, so yanno, I gotta think of branding, too. Do we all have two somethings to submit? That way the chosen reader could select between the two.
No- it's OK. I'll switch gears and make mine not as racy as I was gonna. No worries!
Actually, I'd just as soon post what I already made since I've been sitting on it three weeks, and it's gonna be another three before this gets done. Besides, it saves me the trouble of finding something else.
Have you considered for those times you don't read your own, reading an excerpt from a book you love instead of each other's? It would remove the pressure of not wanting to butcher a fellow minion's work by mispronouncing words or blowing the punch line.
OK, EE. Sounds good to me. You can say anything you wanna say, as long as you're saying it out loud where I can hear you, and I'll be happy.
I hadn't thought about reading from a book - but that would be a good idea for another time.
I was in Old Town Alexandria, down by the river, until just a few minutes ago - and there's a wonderful independent bookseller that I think is filing for bankruptcy. It just breaks my heart- it reminds me of others like it, W. K. Stewart in Louisville, a while back, for one, that have been bought out over the past few decades, or gone under in other ways.
I picked up a copy of one of my all-time favorite novels - Robert Penn Warren's All The King's Men (I lost my old copy in a divorce a long time ago, when I forgot to pack some boxes in a truck...well, it's a long story.) And I picked up a Tim O'Brien book I haven't read before - The Things They Carried. I'm not gonna read it for a while - but even so, I wanted it.
I was really upset that another book I loved so much and lost in those boxes of books I didn't go back and retrieve, Sophie's Choice, wasn't there.
So yes, reading a passage from a favorite work would be a wonderful thing.
This is a long way of saying
...good idea.
I don't mind reading a sex scene either, just don't make me write one! ;)
I loved The Things They Carried, go read it. I don't know what I'd pick for a favourite, let alone a favourite passage, though.
I have internet again so I will participate if at all possible. I can switch with whomever, but I'm not comfortable with strong language. Minor cursing is all right.
I had thought about a scene that is mildly erotic, but if that's not comfortable we have 176,000 words to choose from. Yes, I am weeping and gnashing teeth at this monster.
Looks like we might need to split up the "sex and bad words - yee-ha" group from the "no way, no how" group, you all.
P. S.
I don't know how long I'll have internet tonight- as I'm out of town and frankly, piggybacking on an internet source -and not really sure how I'm doing that. I just tried it in this internet-less house, and it worked.
Sept. 4th should work for me. I will have failed my program by then and will have tons of time on my hands. ;)
Hey Sylvia,
I loved Tim O'Brien's Cacciato novel, and I'd read about this one, so thought I'd pick it up - sounds from what you said - that was a good thing to do. Thanks for the heads up!
Also, forgot to mention from an earlier post - that's really cool about the story with a character that you realized later on was like me. Thanks for that - I love that.
Hey paca -
1- You ain't failin' yer program there, boy. Yer too smart for that.
2- Yes, please play on the 4th!
So- to recap, we now have:
Natalie
Kiersten
Whirl
Fredddie
Pete
McK
BT
Robin
Sylvia
ril
paca
probably Julie (internet dependent)
and....
EE.
We should probably get together what we want read - and maybe the middle of this week - have a name drawing.
I have internet, but the computer crashed last night. Hopefully, it's an easy fix like it was last time.
The laptop isn't recognizing Word, but I can get things off the thumb drive with wordpad. Sooooo, I think I'm all right.
I'm half-hoping the story gets rejected in time to use as my text for the exchange - how sad is that?
Good, Jules. Glad to hear that, and ha! Sylvia - that's a scream.
But I'm crossing my fingers for publication! You go, girl.
